The Flim-flam film series presents a compelling collection of stories of swindles and fabricated realities. Uniting classic works with exciting new short films, the series explores cinematic tropes such as doppelgangers, false identities and body swaps. Every Wednesday and Sunday, audiences can enjoy the work of film directors such as Elaine May, Orson Welles, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, alongside the Australian premiere of acclaimed new shorts by Garrett Bradley and Wong Ping.

Art Gallery of NSW curator of film, Ruby Arrowsmith-Todd, said Flim-flam is an intriguing introduction to cinema’s fiendish grifters and imposters, at a time when conversations about truth and fiction are so prevalent.

"This series proposes that our current fascination with the double pivots on questions of authenticity and deception. We’re held rapt by the rise and fall of Instagram fraudsters, sham startups and deep fakes. In the space between the original and its counterfeit lurks the con, and this is what unites the films that feature in Flim-flam," Arrowsmith-Todd said

“To gain a victim’s trust, a good con artist puts on a good show. These films make riveting viewing because they exploit the scammer’s tools of comic distraction, too-good-to-be-true coincidence and sensationalist plot twists,” Arrowsmith-Todd added.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is delighted to announce an extensive autumn film program with two new series on offer. The latest instalment in the much-loved free film program is Flim-flam, a cinematic survey of fakes, cons and doubles, then in March the Gallery launches the first edition of Projections, a new monthly film series exploring future directions in the moving image.

The Flim-flam film series was developed in association with the Gallery's current exhibition, Shadow catchers, that investigates the ways shadows, body doubles and mirrors haunt our understanding of photography and the moving image. Flim-flam runs weekly in the Domain Theatre from 4 March to 3 May 2020. Early bird tickets are available online.

Projections, is the Gallery's new free monthly film series, exploring future directions in the moving image. Featuring artist talks, performances alongside screenings of contemporary cinema, Projections presents the work of filmmakers including 2019 Turner Prize-winner Lawrence Abu Hamdan (Lebanon), Basma Alsharif (Palestine/Kuwait) and Malena Szlam (Chile).

Projections is a much-needed platform in Sydney for emerging and established artists who are transforming the way we think about film, at the intersection of the gallery and the black-box.

The first edition of Projections, on Saturday 7 March, titled Lawrence Abu Hamdan x Basma Alsharif, is a program of films exploring sound, borders and the politics of listening in a settler colony, followed by a response by writer and artist Andrew Brooks.

Upcoming highlights of the new series include the Sydney premiere of acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Khalik Allah’s Black mother (2018, Jamaica) followed by a performance by Sydney-based collective Black Birds. Projections runs monthly in the Domain Theatre. Early bird tickets are available online. Projections is proudly supported by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UTS.
