Curatorial+Co. presents an exhibition of new works by Melbourne-based multimedia artist Daniel O’Toole from 10 – 20 February 2021. For Deliquescent Light, O’Toole will immerse audiences in a field of colour and sound, with 13 paintings, three video works and a custom created soundtrack informed by synaesthesia to enhance the exhibition and the way the audience experiences colour. One hundred limited edition transparent vinyl records of the soundtrack will be on display and available as part of the exhibition, with a hand painted canvas square unique to each record.

Daniel O’Toole works across a variety of media including painting, video, sound and installation. Previously a prolific street artist, O’Toole has moved to focus on this new series of video works and paintings that draw heavily on music, visualising the experience of listening. The sonic addition has been designed to complement the works, drawing the audience’s attention to the passage of time and slowing down the experience of how light behaves, noticing the refraction events taking place and how the colour hues shift while navigating the space within O’Toole’s paintings.

I use painting to suspend these moments of beauty.

Daniel O’Toole said: “I blur the line between disciplines – always looking for an outcome which unites the various aspects of my practice in a cohesive way. Kinetic distortion, the movement of shadows, the way that sunlight and water react in different vessels, modulation of light waves or soundwaves – these nuanced micro-events that can be easily missed in everyday life form the focus of my time-based works. I use painting to suspend these moments of beauty.”

Sophie Vander, Founder and Director of Curatorial+Co. said: “There’s something incredibly unique and exciting about Daniel O’Toole’s new work, offering a glimpse inside his mind during the creation process as he visualises sound and light through colour. Audiences will be intrigued and delighted by how Daniel’s work engages all of our senses.”

Daniel O’Toole is a multimedia artist based in Melbourne, Victoria. Daniel takes inspiration from the Los Angeles ‘Light and Space’ Movement of the 1960s and reframes his works in the context of post-digital contemporary Australia.

Daniel’s paintings are framed behind a semi-transparent screen, to alter perception and re-animate the static image for the audience. His works aim to question the ubiquity of the digital screen, the works emphasise ‘seeing’ as an active engagement rather than a passive receiving.

Daniel studied at National Art School in Sydney and has been a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize and Calleen Art Award.
